A survey carried out by the Brazilian Association of Tour Operators (Braztoa) showed that the revenue generated by tourism in 2021 was between US$ 700 and US$ 900 billion and 82.5% of travel via planes was through Brazil, while only 17.5% of flights were international.
However, Pablo Zabala, vice-president of Braztoa, in an interview with CNN, stated that this market could change over the months because the “fall in the dollar should encourage international travel”. The US currency has depreciated 17% since January 3, 2022.
He also points out that another reason that should encourage the search for trips abroad is the pandemic. With flexibility in several countries, Brazilians are looking for tickets outside Brazil.
Zabala also highlighted that, in 2021, people chose to travel by car and looked for closer destinations. “As the pandemic eased, there was a demand for air travel, even if to destinations that were still close.” This movement gave volume to the tourism market in the second half of last year.
The BRAZTOA study also pointed out that the most popular destinations are the northeast; due to the heat, southeast; due to the large hubs; and south, due to the supply of mountains and cold, they had strong demand in the previous year.
